With 2 days to go now, I am releasing information on another artwork that will be on display at Showcase Cities. This image is the first from my new series of young, suited and booted males, all hand created in black and white on coloured papers.

The original piece will be framed and available from Rich Mix on Wednesday 15th February, with prints available the night.

Pepe White - Movie Themed

With Showcase Cities at Rich Mix, only 3 days away now, I am preparing artwork for display for the Quick On The Draw space. The illustrations I will be featuring will include a selection of framed prints from my portfolio. One of which is this sketch by the name 'Pepe White'.

Because this image is one of the more minimalistic, I have decided to treat each individual print (of 50) as a blank canvas (so to speak) and turn them, each by hand, into movie themed artworks. The first version of this will be available to view (and buy) on Wednesday at the Showcase exhibition, and will be 'Drive' themed. So if you are at all interested to see how this turns out, please come down to Rich Mix on the 15th February!

In addition, I will leave this theme open to suggestions from people, and plan to create a short-list of entries to include in the series. So if you want to see this image converted into your favourite feature film, then please leave your comments or email me directly. The best suggestions will be created and include your name in the credits!

Lost In Talent Banner

I was very recently asked if I could lend an image of mine for a blog banner, for Lost In Talent. Here is the design that I put together, based on the original image (which I must mention is quite an old one of mine that I had all but forgotten about) now live for the world to see.

Lost In Talent is in its early stages but is worth visiting and reading. There are some interesting and honest, personal responses to things out there in the world of art, design, music and anything else that stimulates our brains. Most definitely one to follow. I know I will be (and not because my work is on there).

Well, 2 illustrations in 2 days for Amelia's Magazine now. If only I was this busy all the time and got paid for all the work I did! Oh, the life of a freelance illustrator....

This is a little portrait image I did for an article reviewing Peter Broderick's forthcoming new album http://www.itstartshere.com. If you haven't listened to Peter's music before, or don't know who he is or what he does (like me before this project) then shame on you, as he is really rather decent at the old music stuff! Had the album on in the background while attempting to create his likeness in pencil and this is what it evoked within me.

Definitely give Amelia's review a read. I think she uses some key adjectives very aptly for this music.

Hour 12: All finished! Final sketch finished with time to spare. Thank you Tamika for your suggestions for background movies over the past few hours. Unfortunately, I am not an owner of Sex & The City 1 or 2, so they were not an option. In the end, background noise was as follows: Devil Wears Prada; Zoolander; Amelie: The Perfect Storm; Michael Jackson: Number Ones (twice); Everyone Loves Raymond; Frasier & Friends. Please feel free to pass comment and opinions on the work. There will hopefully be another 12 or 24 hour session in the next few months possibly involving some of my creative friends, so stay tuned for that!

Hour 11: TV is now on, Everybody Loves Raymond, then Frasier, then Friends for the finale. I have made a bit of a mess in the living room, so I will have to start cleaning up soon. One more hour and one more sketch to go.

Hour 10: The Michael Jackson DVD is now on repeat, I enjoyed it that much the first time around. My final man sketch of the series. Only 2 more to come before I pack up and have a nap.

Hour 09: This is by far my worst image of this session. I'm feeling the effects of a lack of sleep now. My eyes are very tired from drawing all night and it is quite hard to concentrate. And it is now daylight. The sun is shining this morning. Time to grab some food before finishing the final 3 hours.

Hour 08: This was a much quicker sketch. Just pencils and done in 20 minutes as I had a bathroom break and brushed my teeth. I am now working to my Michael Jackson Number Ones DVD. Now 2/3 of the session completed.

Hour 07: Time to grab a drink and a snack. I need a better movie on in the background once this one has finished. I remember seeing The Perfect Storm at the cinema when it came out. It was much better then than it is now. Some very artificial fish involved.
Despite being tired, I'm not sure I can do coffee. I think I'm going to have to go with a cup of Earl Grey and a banana. It's times like this that I could do with a selection of biscuits!

12 Hours: Sketch 06

Hour 06: Half way through now and beginning to tire. I think this one is designed to reflect how I'm feeling right now. Amelie has sadly finished (it was the best background movie to work to so far) and I have put The Perfect Storm on, purely because it was next on the pile. I can't say it will distract my attention from my work!

Hour 05: Fifth sketch from this series. This one has silver pen on it which required some hair-dryer action to dry quickly enough to scan. I might avoid using it again for this reason. Though I am running low on coloured papers to collage.

Hour 04: I am now 1/3 of the way through this session, and I thought I would mark this by drawing a bloke. I don't tend to do so very often, but it is fun to mix things up now and again. Zoolander is over already. These movies seem to be flying by whilst I'm working. Amelie is now on the screen. Brilliant colours, cinematography and Audrey Tautou to inspire me over the next few hours. Can't be bad.

12 Hour Sketchy Session

As of 22:00 tonight (UK time) I will be working on a 12 hour sketching session, working on various projects that are currently ongoing. Imagery and commentary will be posted every hour until the end of the session to document continuous results and identify the effect an overnight session will have on my creativity.

Depending on the success of this, I will host further sessions, perhaps with other creatives, bouncing ideas about in order to see what we can come up with.

This is a mock, vintage styled book cover for The Adventures Of George Gordon Byron, one of Englands' most famous poets and lotharios. This image is intended to depict Byron as a more modern man, with hints of old fashioned style and sophistication, and a slightly impish cockiness about his manner.

Another of my slightly older projects featured this week on Illustration Served. This selection of images was a visual investigation into the infamous Japanese Fruits, as seen in the 2 volumes of the book 'Fruits'. This branch of street fashion is fantastically creative and lavish, and occasionally borderline insanity; and remains a visual source of inspiration to me. Expect further development of this type of fashion based imagery from me in the future, perhaps this winter, as the days become shorter and darker and the skies grayer and duller, and I'm in desperate need of an injection of colour into my life.

Exhibition at Cafe 1001, Brick Lane, with the Showcase London event. I created something fresh and new for the night, reflecting on a pretty rubbish poem that I wrote. This is quite a personal piece but keeps the meaning subdued and masked behind a pretty facade.

The night itself was fantastic. I was lucky to meet some great people and there was some fantastic work on show. I just want to point out that the guy in the picture next to my piece is my friend Nick from AKQA, trying to do an impression of the lady in the image. Or something like that.

Exhibition in Poole

Another exhibition to tell you about, this time in Poole High Street, Dorset (my home town).

The exhibition takes place in a converted shop called Music Zone which is on Poole High Street.

The private view is on Tuesday 28th from 5 to 7 pm. The exhibition will run from Wednesday till Friday from 9:30 to 15:30.

I should be exhibiting my recent collaborations with Luke Waller (see below, or Luke Waller's blog). Also exhibiting will be Harriet Gray and Jamie Littler and some more recent graduates from the Arts Institute at Bournemouth. It should be a great collection of different works, so if you can, get on down there and have a browse!

A good friend and colleague, Luke Waller, reluctantly agreed to have a go at some collaborative work with me recently. So far we have 3 images created, myself drawing a female figure, and Luke decorating with the traditional heraldry pattern work. Here is one example. So I'm back from China, and had an amazing time there. Wu Han is a beautiful city and has amazing people which I'm sure all who traveled with me will agree.
